What is a sitemap?

Search engine needs information about the blog in a specific format and this format is in the form of xml.
A sitemap file contains all the information about the blog or website i.e. how many posts are there, how many pages are there, how many videos and other files are present etc.

Search engines like Google,Bing,Yahoo,Baidu,Yandex,DuckDuckGo etc are able to read this file while crawling and gather all the information about the website or blog. Search engines keeps all the information about the blog regarding its upgradation, changes, language etc.

If the pages or posts in your blogs are properly linked then no doubt search engine will get the most while crawling and provide the updated information in organic search.

If your blog has more then 26 posts then it is necessary to submit sitemap it is because blogger generally keeps the information about latest 26 posts.

Sitemap will helps a lot like :

  • Your pages will appear in organic search result.
  • You can get more visitors.
  • You can enhance your revenue.
  • Bloggers can achieve the expected results through proper sitemap submission.
Sitemap files have extension XML, this file is like a big directory which contains all the necessary information about your blog.

Do you know the problem with blogger sitemap file:
If any developer is using blogger to host blog then by default blogger XML sitemap file use only the most recent twenty six posts. You can check example here. I have hosted the www.indianbazars in blogger and if you see here Check Site Map of Indian bazars, you will find only the details of latest 26 post.  But I have more than 250 post in this blog so my older pages are deprived of crawling properly and due to this most of the pages may not get indexed by search engines.  So it is necessary to fix this problem.
It is necessary to generate a XML specially for blogger and then we can getrid of this problem easily. Every blogger must need this idea to enhance blogging.

Steps to add google sitemap to blogger blog:

  1. Generate complete sitemap for your blog , it doesn’t matter what you are using i.e. xyx.blogspot.com or a custom domain like xyx.com.
  2. Open the sitemap generator online through google .
  3. Copy your site name and paste it in the space and click on create sitemap. You may get different options in different sitemap generators online.
  4. Now copy the entire generated text and then go to robots.txt option in blogger for this follow this step-
  5. Setting -> search Preference -> Edit the Custom robots.txt
  6. Now paste the XML and save settings, and you are done.
Now search engine will automatically fetch data from your XML sitemap file via robots.txt.
The main aim of this article is to show a good way to the new bloggers to enhance the blog traffic by pushing the blog to search engine in a better way. Every blogger works very hard to earn a penny and when anyone don’t get the proper return then frustration starts generating in mind.
The same thing happened with me before sometime when my other blogs were not giving the results as per expectations then after regular research I came to know that my blog has no proper site map submission and this is prohibiting my blogs to respond properly in organic search.
The latest sitemap protocol was developed so that the big blogs may get proper response in search engines. Some blog has thousands of pages and they don’t get the proper return because bloggers don’t have the knowledge of sitemap submission.

Now let’s understand robots.txt file:

robots.txt is a text file which guide the crawlers about how to crawl pages of the blog.robots.txt file is a part of robots exclusion protocol (REP)which includes directives like meta robots, as well as  page-, subdirectory-, or site-wide instructions for how search engines should treat links (such as  “follow” or “nofollow”).

Let's see the format of robots.txt file:

User-agent: [user-agent name]
Disallow: [URL string not to be crawled]

Here is an Example of 'testxyz.com' robots.txt file :
